

"Search optimization" is a term often used to refer to the process of maximizing a web site's chances of being ranked favorably with one or more of the major search engines/directories, e.g., Google, Yahoo, MSN, and AOL.
The truth is that there is really no one "magic bullet' that will put your site at the top of page one of the "free" listings (as opposed to paid placements) on, e.g., Google, or Yahoo.

On the other hand, smaller, more niche-type sites have a greater likelihood of achieving high search ranking/visibility, particularly if they are constructed from the ground up to be search engine "friendly" in conjunction with a well thought out search optimization plan.
It should also be noted that doing the wrong things (even unintentionally) to enhance your search engine standings can have serious, long-term ill effects on your web site's rankings/visibility.
