Search Optimization

Search Optimization: Part Science, Part Art

"Search optimization" is a term often used to refer to the process of maximizing a web site's chances of being ranked favorably with one or more of the major search engines/directories, e.g., Google, Yahoo, MSN, and AOL.

The truth is that there is really no one "magic bullet' that will put your site at the top of page one of the "free" listings (as opposed to paid placements) on, e.g., Google, or Yahoo.

Search ranking (a/k/a search "visibility") depends on a number of factors, not all of which are in the web developer's control. For example, if your business happens to be one of many in a fairly broad, well-populated category (e.g., electronics or jewelry sales) , it will be difficult (not impossible) to achieve a high, first-page ranking under normal circumstances.

On the other hand, smaller, more niche-type sites have a greater likelihood of achieving high search ranking/visibility, particularly if they are constructed from the ground up to be search engine "friendly" in conjunction with a well thought out search optimization plan.

It should also be noted that doing the wrong things (even unintentionally) to enhance your search engine standings can have serious, long-term ill effects on your web site's rankings/visibility.

Our Approach

At JRS Solutions, we understand that the best approach to obtaining high search rankings/visibility involves paying close attention to a number of factors, including, but not limited to, site architecture, coding technologies and styles, site semantics, linking, and a host of other factors. Most important is having a thorough understanding of what the client is trying to achieve via their web presence.

Did You Know?

That there are ways to code a web page that make the visible items appear in a particular order/layout, while the underlying web code is arranged in a different order/layout, resulting in a more search engine "friendly" page? It's true.

It's also true that certain coding technologies like external "load once" cascading style sheets ("css"), external javascript files, and "semantic" code markup can make a web site load faster and be more accessible to search robots ("bots") and visitors using non-traditional browsing devices (e.g., screen readers).
